    This doesn't answer your question unfortunately, but for development purposes, I would assume that "Twitter development" and SMS will continue to fork pretty dramatically over the next few years. With a lot of people moving to phones that support alternate tweeting applications, Twitter's future probably doesn't involve SMS for too much longer. Sure you'll always be able to send a standard message, but in five years, I guarantee that at least 90% of all tweeting activity will not be conducted over SMS. It probably already isn't.

    I do very rarely see tweets from txt messages, but I think SMS's
    constraints have helped twitter to resist feature creep and
    differentiate with facebook
